Last summer Ian Dory was a big surprise at the UBC Nationals at the Outdoor Retailer show. Though twice a junior nationals champion, and known around his home area of Fort Collins as a strong climber and boulderer, the 20-year-old Dory was a new face to many, making a finals field that cut some extremely strong climbers.
His current trip to the Red River Gorge saw him onsight his first 13c, Pushing up Daisies in the Madness Cave. A few of the other climbs he onsighted at the RRG include: Bohica (5.13b), Flower Power (5.13b), 40 Oz of Justice (5.13a), and Easy Rider (5.13a). He climbed Dracula ( 5.13b) second try. In recent months he has focused on bouldering and building up his power for ABS Nationals but after making the US Team he's changed his emphasis to sport climbing in hopes of making the SCS US team as well.
"Last month I did have a personal epic on a climb in Hueco called Esperanza," he relates with humor, "which took me over a 100 attempts." It was his first V14.
Dory is a regular at Horsetooth, Mount Evans and other local areas, frequently climbing with Matty Hong and James Hickey. You can keep an eye on him at http://www.undergroundbouldering.com/
